Bertha Centre for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship in partnership with EMpower and Community Keepers is inviting you to a 2-day Mental Health Practitioners Focused Workshop.

Molweni from the Bertha Centre team! We hope that this message finds you in high spirits.

As part of the Bertha Centre’s commitment to better support the youth development ecosystem, the Youth Innovation portfolio in partnership with Community Keepers, an organisation dedicated to improving the social and emotional well-being of learners in schools, and EMpower, a youth focused organisation dedicated to enabling marginalised young people to transform their lives and communities, bring you the How to Layer Mental Health Into Existing Youth Programmes workshop on the 7th and 8th of December of 2023.

How do I know this programme is for me?

Do you work with young people and have always worried about how to create safe spaces for them? Does your organisation worry about how to adequately address the mental well-being needs of young people? Then this workshop is for you. With a little basic training, you can learn to listen, provide support and offer real guidance to people in need.
What will the workshop cover?

Understanding Youth Mental Health
Prioritising Youth Mental Health
Designing programmes for Youth Mental Health
Creating Safe Spaces for Youth

Why is this important?

Research conducted by SALDRU in 2021, indicated that there was a significant increase in depressive symptoms amongst youth, yet access to mental health support is severely constrained. In South Africa, crude estimates indicate that, in 2016 and 2017, only 0.89 per cent and 7.35 per cent of the uninsured population requiring care received some form of public inpatient and outpatient mental healthcare, respectively (Docrat et al., 2019). If young people are to be better supported then collaborative efforts looking to capacitate the NGO ecosystem to better support the mental health of young people is required.

The workshop will be the first of three that the Bertha Centre will run, all aimed at equipping practitioners with skills to better support the mental health of their participants. Keep an eye on our social media for info on the next workshops.
