What is Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)?
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is defined as a first, non-specialist response to someone in distress, providing initial help and support. Its function is to assist with minor distress and to identify and refer individuals facing more serious mental health challenges. MHFA is not counselling, but rather a critical interaction and response designed to ensure a place of care and safety. The role includes acting when an individual is experiencing a crisis, identifying signs of mental health challenges, and providing initial guidance and direction.
What will I learn in this training?
The online training focuses on modules 1-4, and 6 of the MHFA Training Manual that you will receive after registration.
Key areas of learning include understanding the CARE Ecosystem (module 1), which involves identifying potential risk and protective factors that influence mental health and recognising the impact of trauma. The training teaches how to manage referral pathways and resources (module 2), including understanding the process for connecting individuals to collaborative services. You will gain crucial practical skills in check-ins, clarification, containment, and basic listening skills (module 3), which focus on establishing confidentiality, conducting safety checks, clarifying referral reasons, and using core competencies for quality care. Lastly, the training focuses heavily on crisis identification and management (module 4), preparing trainees to identify and respond appropriately to disclosures of abuse or deliberate neglect (including mandated reporting) and how to assess and manage risks related to suicidality and self-harming behaviour, and ethical care (module 6).
What is the benefit?
You will learn a new skill which could open the door to job opportunities in a school, childcare setting (or child-care), youth club or a sport group.
How do I gain access to the training material?
After completing the registration form, you will receive a link to Module 1 – via the feedback message when submitting the form, and via an email that will be sent within 2 business days.
How do I continue to the next module?
In each online training module folder, you will find a page with the module overview and a link to the training assignment (a Google Form link). After submitting the assignment, you will receive a link to the next module – again, via the feedback message when submitting the form, and via an email that will be sent within 2 business days.
What is the format of the assignments?
The assignment will be made available to trainees via a Google Form link. All of the assignments will have a multiple choice section, with points allocated for each question. You will receive a score out of 20 for the multiple choice section. This score will be released and sent to you via email automatically after submitting the assignment.
Most module assignments will also have a second section, with reflective questions. Trainees are encouraged to share their thoughts on what they have learned in the online training videos. The purpose of the assignments is to enhance your learning experience, and to prepare those who will continue to the online training sessions with the necessary pre-knowledge. This will assist trainees to take part in discussions and activities. AI-generated answers will not help you with that!
What does the in-person training workshop involve?
From time to time we will host an in-person training workshop in different areas. The in-person training will involve interactive discussion sessions and role-play activities. It is therefore important that trainees are familiar with all the online training material.
Only trainees who have completed all 5 online training modules will be considered. As there are limited seats available for the in-person training sessions, trainees will be shortlisted based on their training assignments and authentic reflections (we want to see your answers, not google- or AI-generated answers). Based on interest, additional sessions might be scheduled.
Do I get a certificate for completing this training?
Each module folder includes a document with the module overview and a link to the module assignment. All trainees who complete all 5 module assignments and receive at least 75% in each of the assignments (15/20 for the multiple choice section) will receive a certificate of proficient completion. These certificates will be sent out at the end of each month.
All trainees who participate in the in-person workshop will receive a certificate of participation.
