Our Impact is Social Justice

Pre-Covid, there was only one state social worker for 32 000 learners in public schools.  By 2021, this had improved to 1:23 000.

In partnership with our funders we open rooms on school premises, removing barriers to access and bringing the ratio down to a more just 1:990 and together with National Treasury’s Jobs Fund, we were able to reduce this further (1:440) by welcoming young people from the local community, with lived experience, to join our team and offer mental health first aid as frontline support.

Professor Vikram Patel, Harvard Professor and Chair of Global Health and Social Medicine, says: “Mental health is too important to leave to the professionals alone.”

The World Economic Forum agrees: “We can’t make progress without investing in mental health… ”
