“How to Layer Mental Health Into Existing Youth Programmes”
We are with the Bertha Centre for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship in partnership with EMpower – The Emerging Markets Foundation Ltd for a 2-day Mental Health Practitioners Focused Workshop.
The workshop is called “How to Layer Mental Health Into Existing Youth Programmes” and covers the following themes:
– Defining mental health
– Why a focus on mental health support is necessary
– Unpacking Mental Health First Aid
– The importance of care for the carer
– Crisis control
– A skills based approach to mental health
.
Research conducted by SALDRU in 2021, indicated that there was a significant increase in depressive symptoms amongst youth, yet access to mental health support is severely constrained. In South Africa, crude estimates indicate that, in 2016 and 2017, only 0.89 per cent and 7.35 per cent of the uninsured population requiring care received some form of public inpatient and outpatient mental healthcare, respectively (Docrat et al., 2019). If young people are to be better supported then collaborative efforts looking to capacitate the NGO ecosystem to better support the mental health of young people is required.
.
The workshop will be the first of three that the Bertha Centre will run, all aimed at equipping practitioners with skills to better support the mental health of their participants.

Keep an eye on social media for info on the next workshops.
